We’re seen as America’s second best friend
With some good reason I’d say, given many Canadians’ propensity for default anti-Americanism–until St. Obama came along. Plus the fact that British governments (both stripes) are actually serious about foreign and defence policy, as are Americans generally. Whereas in Canada:

The Conservative government has tried to be more sérieux, but with only limited success I’d say–for defence specifics see here and here.

Interesting. I think I would have put Australia second.
The UK has a far more prominent role on the international stage. To most Americans, Canada is, for the lack of a better metaphor, a very large suburb.
