The right thing to do, though the damage is done:
The Fox News television host who mocked Canadian troops in Afghanistan has apologized for what he says was a satire.
“The March 17th episode of Red Eye [before the most recent troop deaths in Afghanistan, though after 112 Canadian Forces personnel had given their lives – DP] included a segment discussing Canada’s plan for a ‘synchronized break,’ which was in no way an attempt to make light of troop efforts,” Greg Gutfeld, host of the segment, told the Canwest News Service on Monday in an e-mailed statement.
“However, I realize that my words may have been misunderstood. It was not my intent to disrespect the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military, and for that I apologize. Red Eye is a satirical take on the news, in which all topics are addressed in a lighthearted, humourous and ridiculous manner.”
They have the “lighthearted” and “ridiculous” parts down flat, anyway. Not surprisingly, commenters at canada.com and CTV are responding to Gutfeld’s ignorant, sweeping generalizations about Canadians by…making ignorant, sweeping generalizations about Americans:
I know that not all Americans are like this, but, it’s this kind of ignorant yahoo that makes me dislike the U.S. as a whole. And makes me empathize a bit with the people who call the U.S. enemy.
Its sad how stupid some Americans can be is’t it? Apparently Fox needs to fire their fact finders. As for the comments made….the fact that they can from Americans does NOT surprise me at all.
We keep reading how insulted some Americans are in this classless statement from FOX NEWS. Well Americans if you are so insulted and you don’t want us Canadians to paint you all in the same brush, do us a favor and step up to the plate and cancel your subscription to FOX NEWS and demand that your President do something about this RACIST NEWS COMPANY. Also I feel that the President of the USA should go public about his outrage of FOX NEWS.
In reality, this semi-obscure late-night talk-show host speaks for all Americans no more than Heather Mallick speaks for all Canadians, but where’s the fun in acknowledging that?
Mark has much more at The Torch.
