Gutfeld apologizes

The right thing to do, though the damage is done:

The Fox News television host who mocked Canadian troops in Afghanistan has apologized for what he says was a satire.
“The March 17th episode of Red Eye [before the most recent troop deaths in Afghanistan, though after 112 Canadian Forces personnel had given their lives – DP] included a segment discussing Canada’s plan for a ‘synchronized break,’ which was in no way an attempt to make light of troop efforts,” Greg Gutfeld, host of the segment, told the Canwest News Service on Monday in an e-mailed statement.
“However, I realize that my words may have been misunderstood. It was not my intent to disrespect the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military, and for that I apologize. Red Eye is a satirical take on the news, in which all topics are addressed in a lighthearted, humourous and ridiculous manner.”

They have the “lighthearted” and “ridiculous” parts down flat, anyway. Not surprisingly, commenters at and CTV are responding to Gutfeld’s ignorant, sweeping generalizations about Canadians by…making ignorant, sweeping generalizations about Americans:

I know that not all Americans are like this, but, it’s this kind of ignorant yahoo that makes me dislike the U.S. as a whole. And makes me empathize a bit with the people who call the U.S. enemy.
Its sad how stupid some Americans can be is’t it? Apparently Fox needs to fire their fact finders. As for the comments made….the fact that they can from Americans does NOT surprise me at all.
We keep reading how insulted some Americans are in this classless statement from FOX NEWS. Well Americans if you are so insulted and you don’t want us Canadians to paint you all in the same brush, do us a favor and step up to the plate and cancel your subscription to FOX NEWS and demand that your President do something about this RACIST NEWS COMPANY. Also I feel that the President of the USA should go public about his outrage of FOX NEWS.

In reality, this semi-obscure late-night talk-show host speaks for all Americans no more than Heather Mallick speaks for all Canadians, but where’s the fun in acknowledging that?

Your entire national politics is based on not wanting to be as “bad” as the USA, yet you get outraged over insulting jokes by American comedians? That takes some nerve.

  2. Ellie in T.O. says:

To be fair, I doubt this would have turned into a full-blown controversy had it not been for the loss of those four soldiers. The gag struck a raw nerve mainly because it was so ill-timed. The only thing to do after such a horrific faux pas is apologize, which he did. Now it’s time to move on.

    What damage was done?
I mean other than the spectacle of our defence minister demanding apologies from “semi-obscure late-night talk-show host”(s).

  4. Dara says:

    Blah Blah Blah.
Somebody in the 3am slot doesn’t have a finely honed sense of humour. Stop the presses.
But I’m kind of surprised. This blog is very much against terrorism, so why no mention of the terrorist threats made against the club in Edmonton?
Shouldn’t we be rounding up Edmontonians? Their culture obviously makes them a danger to our free society. First they go after the comedians….

  5. Sigivald says:

“Cancel your subscriptions to FOXNEWS”… “RACIST NEWS COMPANY”?
What’s this guy smoking? Nobody “subscribes to” Fox News specifically in the US; it’s in basic cable and satellite packages, bundled. You can’t “cancel” it by itself.
(And racist? Unsubstantiated ad hominem; ten point penalty.)
And, demanding the President denounce a private company for saying something rude? Well, maybe that plays well up North, but not so much here in the States, where we expect the President – at least in principle – to not interfere with the free press (or late-night comedy shows).
The stupidity of internet commenters unites all mankind.
(My take: Gutfeld’s joke was stupid, and nobody watches his show. I think his apology is probably accurate and sincere, in that I suspect he just didn’t think it through very well, rather than intending insult to the Canadian dead and the Canadian contribution to the war.
He’s also been pretty funny when he posted on Huffington Post – the only thing there ever worth reading except as an object lesson.)

  6. Philanthropist says:

Red Eye is a great show, watch it all the time, beats the hell out of that snooty Daily Show self righteousness.
Buck up Canadian kids – when the General in charge of the Army says they’re gonna take a year off – that sounds ridiculous, no? especially when there’s a war on. The Taliban aren’t going to take a year off. What if Toronto’s police chief decided they should take a year off to regroup?
