“Only in Canada could a white South African be accepted as a refugee.” (via Dawg)
Update: lively discussion at Jay Currie’s place. I have to (gulp) agree with Dawg: if you can claim refugee status because of high crime and unemployment, Canada should brace itself for a flood of refugees from Detroit.
Legal refugee or not, doesn’t matter Where is this journalist when all the non-white bogus refugees stream into Canada??
WELCOME BACK!!!!!!! We missed you, Damian (can I have my old room back?)

Just ignore the Dawgster; I’m convinced he takes these contrairian stances for the notoriety it yields.
Welcome back. I told you that you wouldn’t be happy with just one mind to warp. 🙂
Anyway, This guy’s claim seems to be based on the same reasoning Mexicans have been using. So if it’s wrong for Mexicans to be given refugee status on this basis then it’s wrong for this guy to be given refugee status on the same basis. Conversely, if it’s right for this guy to be given refugee status on this basis, then it’s right for Mexicans to be given refugee status on the same basis.
Everyone should keep that in mind in order to avoid looking foolish. And for the record, I think high crime and unemployment rates can be considered a valid basis to claim refugee status.
Damian,
“Refugee” status… What is the legal operative definition?
What then of those who wish to escape the oppression of a marxist regime – where the “official” unemployment is zero and the “official” crime rate is near zero?
Mexico, by the way, has been run by quasi-marxist quasi-fascists for many decades. That it needs to export fully 20% of it’s adult workforce to find employment and health care ought to be a clue to those who just love the idea of Big Gov.

Mexico is the epitome of an unregulated free market state. The major industries are drugs and sites for the exporting of US businesses.
Those with the money make the policies and control those who carry the weapons. This leads to more profits and more power and onto more death of those in opposition. The demand far outstrips the demand and profits are rising.
Big gov is the last thing that Mexico has when its gov can’t even control its state apparatus because of the influence of the above mentioned. So even trying to find a parallel with the situation in the USA is a supreme stretch.
I have to wonder whether Davis had a hidden motive with this. It seems to be a week where administrative tribunals are revolting against the scope of their own jurisdictions.
McClelland states.
“and for the record, I think high crime and unemployment rates can be considered a valid basis to claim refugee status.”
that would also apply to parts of Canada, and the U.S. where would they go for refugee status? the Canadians to the U.S. or the Americans to Canada ?/ or maybe we could all seek refuge in Venezuela
